Roblox launched a real-time, AI-powered chat rephrasing feature on Thursday across its platform to automatically convert banned language into civil alternatives while preserving conversation flow.
Replacing Hash Marks with Constructive Dialogue
The new feature enhances Roblox’s existing text filter, which traditionally masked prohibited words and phrases with strings of hash marks (“####”). Company officials noted that these masked blocks often fragmented player conversations, making dialogue difficult to follow during active gameplay.
Instead of displaying hash symbols, the updated AI system rephrases filtered text into appropriate language that closely matches the user’s intended message. For example, a phrase such as “Hurry TF up!” is automatically adjusted to display as “Hurry up!” All participants in the chat are informed via notification that the message was modified to maintain community civility.
Preserving Safety Standards Across Global Languages
“Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” said Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox, in a press release. “Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil.”
Roblox clarified that while real-time rephrasing mitigates minor chat disruptions, existing safety and enforcement mechanisms remain fully active for severe behavior and policy violations. The rephrasing system operates in all languages supported by Roblox’s automatic translation infrastructure.
Advanced Detection and Broader Safety Context
In tandem with the rephrasing deployment, Roblox upgraded its text-filtering algorithms to better identify bypass attempts. Internal metrics demonstrate improved detection of leetspeak and complex evasive spelling, leading to a 20-fold reduction in false negatives related to soliciting or sharing personal information.
The announcement follows a series of platform safety updates, including the recent implementation of mandatory facial verification for chat access. That measure was instituted after attorneys general from Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana initiated child safety lawsuits, prompted by reports from Bloomberg and Hindenburg Research alleging that Roblox exposed young users to grooming and explicit content.
