Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announced on Wednesday that it will permanently stop manufacturing physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting in January 2028, transitioning its global software distribution entirely to a digital-only framework as player preferences rapidly evolve.
Under this new operational mandate, every title published after the January 2028 deadline will be distributed exclusively through digital storefronts, including the official PlayStation Store and authorized third-party digital retailers. PlayStation games released prior to the cutoff date will remain unaffected and will continue to be distributed on physical media.
A Shift Driven by Player Demand and Digital Sales Data
While physical media has served as a cornerstone of console gaming culture for decades, Sony stated that the decision directly mirrors established purchasing habits across its user base.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company stated in its official press release.
Financial metrics support the strategic pivot. According to Sony’s official financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, digital downloads accounted for 85% of all full-game software sales across the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 platforms, leaving physical software with just a 15% market share.
Retail Impact and the Collector Backlash
The continuous decline in physical media consumption has disrupted traditional brick-and-mortar storefronts. Specialized gaming retailers have suffered significant contraction as consumers increasingly purchase software online. Brick-and-mortar giant GameStop has closed more than 1,300 retail locations over the past two fiscal years alone.
This industry-wide push toward digital-only media continues to spark debate among physical game collectors. The decision follows recent backlash surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, where fans expressed frustration after learning that the game’s boxed physical release would contain a digital download code rather than a physical optical disc.
Legacy Console Store Shutdowns: PS3 and PS Vita
Alongside its long-term hardware strategy, Sony revealed plans to begin sunsetting legacy digital infrastructure. The company will terminate PlayStation Store operations for the PlayStation 3 in select regional markets later this year, preceding a complete global store shutdown for both the PS3 and PlayStation Vita platforms next year.
Once these storefronts shut down, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital software or downloadable content on those systems. However, Sony confirmed that players will retain access to redownload and play previously purchased software for the foreseeable future.
