Roblox Launches Text-to-Game AI Tool on Mobile

Roblox is expanding its generative artificial intelligence ecosystem on July 28 by launching a public alpha test of “Build,” a mobile feature in New Zealand that enables users to create 3D games directly through text prompts. By bringing prompt-based game creation to mobile devices, the platform aims to lower technical barriers and accelerate development across all user experience levels.

Developer Concerns Over Low-Quality AI Content

Roblox joins tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Tencent in introducing generative text-to-content tools. However, the rapid advancement of automated game creation has raised significant concerns among developers and players. Industry critics argue that removing barrier-to-entry mechanics could flood the platform with repetitive, low-effort experiences, forcing human creators to compete against a high volume of rapidly generated software.

These apprehensions align with findings from this year’s Game Developers Conference State of the Game Industry survey, where 52% of game development professionals reported that generative AI is having a overall negative impact on the video game sector.

Algorithmic Moderation and Player Retention

To prevent platform oversaturation, Roblox plans to evaluate AI-generated games using the same algorithmic metrics applied to traditional titles. Visibility will depend primarily on player retention rather than production volume.

Roblox clarified its discovery strategy, stating that its recommendation algorithms prioritize experiences demonstrating long-term player engagement rather than “AI slop.” The company confirmed that homepage quality standards will remain consistent, noting that experiences without an active player base will not receive algorithmic distribution.

Rollout Details and User Eligibility

The “Build” feature enters public alpha testing on July 28, restricted initially to age-verified users in New Zealand who are nine years of age or older. Creators aged 16 and older will gain the ability to publish their generated experiences to Roblox’s global audience. The feature will launch with a free basic tier alongside paid premium functionality.

Roblox’s AI Infrastructure and Feature Deprecation

In addition to mobile game creation, Roblox is developing autonomous AI agents designed to assist developers with automated playtesting and analytics. These tools are scheduled for rollout in the coming months as part of broader AI infrastructure investments, which include a 3D asset generation model, a developer support chatbot, and a scene-generation model capable of rendering editable 3D environments from single text commands.

The AI initiative follows operational shifts within the platform, as Roblox recently disclosed plans to sunset “Roblox Connect,” its avatar-based video calling tool introduced in 2023.
