Intel Vice President Daniel Rogers announced at CES on Monday that the tech giant is developing a dedicated handheld gaming platform featuring custom silicon to directly challenge AMD’s dominance in the portable PC market.
Panther Lake Architecture Powers New Portable Hardware
The upcoming gaming platform will integrate both hardware and software tailored specifically for portable devices. At the heart of this initiative is a specialized chip built on Intel’s Core Series 3 processors, codenamed Panther Lake. Currently rolling out across traditional PCs, Panther Lake marks the company’s inaugural architecture manufactured on its advanced 18A process, which entered active production in 2025.
According to reporting from IGN, Intel is engineering custom iterations of these Panther Lake processors specifically configured for portable gaming form factors.
Extending PC Gaming Heritage into Handhelds
While entering the portable space represents a strategic expansion, Intel has engineered hardware for PC gaming since the 1990s. The company accelerated its presence in high-performance graphics in 2022 through the launch of its discrete Intel Arc GPUs, creating the technical foundation now powering its handheld initiative.
Disrupting AMD’s Hold on Portable Hardware
Intel’s expansion creates direct competition with AMD, which currently maintains a firm grip on the handheld gaming device market. Underscoring the intensity of the sector, AMD unveiled its flagship Ryzen 7 9850X3D processor alongside updated ray tracing and graphics solutions during its own CES keynote address.
Rogers confirmed that Intel will share full technical specifications and platform details regarding its handheld hardware roadmap later this year.
