Roblox Mandates Age Scans and Global Ratings Amid Pressure

Amid rising legal scrutiny and child safety lawsuits, online gaming giant Roblox announced Wednesday that it is expanding its selfie-based age-estimation technology to all users and partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to enforce standardized age and content ratings across its global platform.

Facial Recognition and Multi-Layered Verification

By the end of this year, Roblox will roll out its age-estimation system to every user accessing communication tools on the platform, including voice and text chat. The system requires users to scan video selfies, which are then analyzed using facial-feature recognition technology to estimate their age.

To increase accuracy beyond standard self-reported birthdates, Roblox merges facial-estimation data with official ID age verification and verified parental consent. Additionally, the company is preparing to launch new features specifically designed to restrict interactions between adult users and minors.

Adopting Global IARC Ratings for Content Transparency

As part of its partnership with IARC, Roblox is replacing its internal maturity tags with official ratings from international classification boards. Under this new structure, players in the United States will see ESRB ratings, while users in the Republic of Korea will see GRAC ratings. German players will view USK classifications, and users across Europe and the United Kingdom will see ratings provided by PEGI.

This standardized system aims to give parents clearer insights into game content by explicitly highlighting descriptors that could raise concerns, such as violence, blood and gore, adult language, substance use, and gambling mechanics.

Building on Earlier Safety Measures and Regulatory Demands

These latest platform changes build upon a series of safety features introduced in July. Those updates implemented facial-age verification to block users under 13 from unfiltered chat features. Furthermore, Roblox restricted users aged 13 to 17 from adding “trusted connections” unless verified through real-life contacts or QR code scans.

The platform’s adjustments come as governments worldwide enact stricter digital age-assurance mandates. Legislation like the U.K.’s Online Safety Act and Mississippi’s age-verification statute—which led social network Bluesky to suspend service in the state—are shifting industry standards. Similar age-assurance laws are moving through state legislatures in Arizona, Wyoming, South Dakota, Virginia, and other jurisdictions.

Technical Safeguards vs. Persistent Safety Concerns

Roblox has previously deployed various technical safety safeguards, including Roblox Sentinel, an open-source AI framework built to detect early signs of child endangerment. The platform also maintains parental management controls, communication blockades, and automated server-monitoring tools designed to shut down spaces where widespread rule violations occur.

Despite these tools, child safety advocates and law enforcement officials argue that bad actors continue to bypass safety controls. Ongoing lawsuits filed by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, alongside civil actions in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania, allege that child predators actively target minors on the platform. A investigation recently reported by The Guardian similarly indicated that underage users frequently encounter inappropriate material and predatory accounts.

Financial exploitation within user-generated experiences has also drawn public criticism. The popular farming simulator Grow a Garden recently made headlines after an unauthorized black market emerged, allowing players to trade virtual items for real currency. Parents expressed concern that the game’s mechanics lured children into spending cash to maintain competitive standing.

Executive Commitment to Content Clarity

While rating updates may not eliminate every threat, corporate leadership maintains that standardized indicators provide essential oversight tools for families.

“Roblox is committed to creating a safe platform for our users and empowering parents to make the best decision for their children,” stated Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox. “We’re excited to partner with IARC and hope it will provide parents globally with more clarity and confidence regarding age-appropriate content.”
