Digital platform Chess.com officially surpassed 200 million members globally this week as it approaches its 20th anniversary, driven by AI product innovation, pop-culture visibility, and rapid international expansion.
Record-Breaking Engagement and Platform Evolution
The online chess giant, originally founded in 2005 and launched in 2007, now boasts 1.5 million paying subscribers. Activity on the site has reached unprecedented levels, with users playing more than 20 million games of chess every single day.
“[Chess has] got this durability to it,” said Albert Cheng, chief growth officer at Chess.com. “It’s been played for over 1,500 years, which is just amazing. And even Chess.com is not a brand new company. It’s been around for almost 20 years. It feels really dynamic.”
The platform has evolved dramatically from its initial iteration as an online discussion forum where over-the-board players analyzed their matches. Today, Chess.com operates a massive ecosystem featuring live matchmaking against real opponents or AI bots, daily tactical puzzles, global chess journalism, and major live tournament streaming.
AI Innovation Captures a New Wave of Beginners
Cheng attributes this sustained momentum largely to continuous product improvements. In 2021, the company integrated an automated AI game review system that breaks down a player’s performance, highlights key tactical blunders, and offers actionable instruction for upcoming matches.
Because the vast majority of new sign-ups are complete beginners, features like automated game analysis help lower the entry barrier and foster long-term engagement across all skill levels.
Pop Culture Momentum and Viral Scandals
Chess.com’s surge reflects broader cultural shifts over recent years. During the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, millions turned to digital gaming for home entertainment, forcing the company to scale its server infrastructure rapidly to match demand.
Mainstream exposure spiked further following the 2020 release of Netflix’s hit miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit.” Subsequent real-world headlines kept the momentum going, including high-profile publicity surrounding the 2022 cheating scandal involving five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen. Additionally, competitive chess is set to make its debut at the Esports World Cup this year.

Global Growth and Mainstream Celebrity Crossovers
The player demographic is increasingly international. According to Cheng, roughly 85% of all new user registrations originate outside the United States. This shift coincides with India’s Gukesh Dommaraju claiming the title of current World Champion.
Cheng, who previously held executive leadership roles in product and growth at Grammarly and Duolingo, noted that cross-industry celebrity exposure continues to unlock new user segments. He highlighted a viral online game featuring Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc competing against one another.
“I think the sky’s the limit here, and the more that we can continue to grow the game by leveraging that organic interest that already exists in these adjacent communities, we’d be foolish not to explore it,” Cheng said. “So I’m really excited by those opportunities.”
