Epic Games announced the acquisition of 3D computer vision platform Loci on Wednesday to automate asset tagging and combat intellectual property violations across its digital ecosystem.
Automating Complex 3D Asset Workflows
Loci utilizes specialized computer vision models designed to analyze and interpret 3D digital content. The technology automatically generates descriptive tags for assets, significantly easing the process of searching, sharing, and discovering content. This automation directly addresses the labor-intensive challenges creators routinely face when managing large-scale digital libraries.
Combatting Intellectual Property Violations
Beyond streamlining manual management, Loci’s asset recognition capabilities will act as a safeguard against potential IP breaches. The integration comes after Fortnite experienced instances where user-generated content imported protected elements from prominent external franchises, including Mario Kart and Shrek.
Integration Across UEFN and Fab
Epic Games plans to deploy Loci’s artificial intelligence across its entire creator ecosystem. Key implementations will include Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) alongside Fab, Epic’s unified digital asset marketplace for buying and selling content.
According to the official announcement, the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
