Google Bets on STAN to Challenge Discord in $8.5M Round

Google has backed STAN, an Indian social gaming platform, participating in an $8.5 million equity funding round to help the startup expand its AI capabilities and international reach.

The $8.5 Million Funding Round and Key Backers

Google joined the investment round via its AI Futures Fund, an initiative launched in May to support startups building tools using Google’s artificial intelligence technologies. The round featured heavy participation from prominent global investors, including Japanese gaming companies Bandai Namco Entertainment, Square Enix, and Reazon Holdings.

Additional participants included Aptos Labs and King River Capital, along with existing investors General Catalyst, T-Accelerate Capital, and GFR Fund. With this latest injection of capital, STAN’s total equity funding has reached approximately $15 million.

How STAN Rewards Gamers Differently Than Discord

Headquartered in Singapore with a primary focus on the Indian market, STAN aims to build a gaming community hub capable of rivaling Discord. However, its core user acquisition and engagement strategies differ substantially from traditional platforms.

STAN allows players to earn an in-app currency called “Gems” by competing in popular titles such as Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Garena’s Free Fire Max, Minecraft, and Call of Duty, as well as casual games like Ludo and Snakes & Ladders. Users can also earn rewards through daily log-ins, referrals, and a spin-to-win feature.

Unlike Discord, where community participation yields primarily social clout, STAN monetizes user engagement directly. Gamers can redeem their earned Gems for real-world shopping vouchers on e-commerce platforms including Amazon, PhonePe, and Flipkart.

Creator Monetization and Community Mechanics

The platform enables creators to establish dedicated chat channels called “Clubs” for individual games. While any user can join these Clubs, accessing premium gaming experiences offered by creators requires spending social currency. STAN generates revenue by taking a commission on these creator transactions.

“STAN is the hangout place for gamers. It’s a place where gamers come and make friends, play with each other, talk to each other, sort of a fusion of social and gaming,” said Parth Chadha, co-founder and CEO of STAN.

Growth accelerated last year when STAN opened its ecosystem to user-generated content, allowing any user to broadcast live streams rather than restricting stream creation to select partners. To date, STAN reports over 25 million total downloads across Google Play and the Apple App Store, maintaining approximately 5.5 million monthly active users.

B2B Revenue and Publisher Integration

Beyond its consumer offerings, STAN operates a direct business-to-business segment. Gaming studios and developers—including Krafton, Garena, and Roblox—pay the startup to reach its active user base of gamers and creators.

According to Chadha, nearly 100 publishers, studios, and developers joined the platform over the past two quarters, with more than 20 new partners onboarding monthly. Chadha noted that this segment is rapidly transforming into a significant operational revenue stream.

AI Integration and Google’s India Portfolio

STAN plans to deploy the capital to integrate Google’s AI tools across its platform, primarily to enhance moderation systems. Currently, automated AI models process between 70% and 80% of moderation on STAN, with human moderators covering the remainder. The company plans to increase the automated ratio further.

Additionally, STAN is building AI-powered toolkits for creators, offering automated meme and avatar generation, quick-reply assistants, and dynamic chat filtering systems.

STAN is the second Indian startup backed by Google’s AI Futures Fund, following Toonsutra, an AI-powered comic reading platform. Google confirmed it has invested more than $5.5 billion in Indian enterprises to date, supporting companies such as Toonsutra, STAN, Pixxel, and Adda247.

International Expansion and Path to Profitability

Although access to the STAN app is currently restricted to India, 5% to 6% of its engagement originates overseas from users accessing the service via Indian phone numbers. Over the next 12 months, the company plans to officially expand geographically across the Indian subcontinent before entering Southeast Asia and Latin America.

After operating profitably for several months, STAN chose to increase capital expenditure to prioritize scale. The company currently employs roughly 40 staff members—with fewer than 30 dedicated to product engineering—and targets sustainable profitability in 2027.
