Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro artificial intelligence model successfully completed the 1996 Nintendo classic Pokémon Blue during a live Twitch stream last night, marking a major milestone for autonomous AI reasoning in complex digital environments.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai publicly celebrated the achievement on social media, posting triumphantly on X: “What a finish! Gemini 2.5 Pro just completed Pokémon Blue!”
The stream, broadcast on the Gemini Plays Pokemon channel, was built independently by Joel Z, a 30-year-old software engineer unaffiliated with Google. Despite the project being an unofficial experiment, top Google leaders closely monitored its progress. Logan Kilpatrick, product lead for Google AI Studio, noted last month that Gemini was making rapid strides by earning its fifth gym badge—outperforming competing models at the time. The momentum prompted Pichai to joke, “We are working on API, Artificial Pokémon Intelligence.”

The push to test artificial intelligence against retro games gained momentum in February when Anthropic highlighted progress made by its Claude models playing Pokémon Red. Anthropic explained that extended thinking and specialized agent training provided a major boost when handling dynamic, multi-step tasks in the classic GameBoy title. The project inspired the creation of both the Claude Plays Pokemon Twitch stream and Joel Z’s Gemini setup.
Although Claude brought widespread attention to AI gaming streams, it has not yet completed Pokémon Red. However, Joel Z cautioned viewers against using Gemini’s completion as a definitive performance benchmark. He noted on his Twitch page that direct comparisons are inaccurate because Gemini and Claude rely on different software tools and receive different contextual inputs.

Understanding Agent Harnesses
Neither model plays the game unassisted. Instead, they rely on specialized framework software known as agent harnesses. These systems analyze in-game screenshots overlaid with actionable metadata, allowing the central large language model to evaluate the situation, delegate actions to sub-agents, and trigger the appropriate GameBoy controller inputs.
Developer Interventions vs. Cheating
Joel Z acknowledged making developer interventions throughout the run to help Gemini navigate complex moments, but insisted these adjustments did not undermine the accomplishment.
“My interventions improve Gemini’s overall decision-making and reasoning abilities,” Joel Z stated. “I don’t give specific hints — there are no walkthroughs or direct instructions for particular challenges like Mt. Moon.”
The single exception involved informing Gemini that it needed to speak with a Rocket Grunt twice to obtain the Lift Key—a prompt required due to a specific interaction bug that was only resolved in the subsequent release, Pokémon Yellow. The developer emphasized that the Gemini Plays Pokémon framework remains under active development as its architecture continues to evolve.
