The Pokémon Company officially unveiled Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves during a 30th-anniversary livestream, confirming that the 10th generation of the main series will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027 as an expansive open-world oceanic adventure.
New Gen 10 Starters Introduced
The debut broadcast introduced gamers to the three companion Pokémon starting options for this generation. Players can choose Browt, a Grass-type “bean chick” reminiscent of an Angry Birds character; Pombon, a Fire-type Pomeranian that fans hope better not evolve into a bipedal man; or Gecqua, a Water-type gecko featuring distinctive pink eyes.
A Tropical Open-World Setting
Prior industry reports rumored that the upcoming region takes inspiration from Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The initial trailer heavily reinforces these reports by showcasing lush jungles, seaside mountain ranges, tropical settlements, and underwater coral reefs across a massive archipelago.
Keen-eyed viewers also spotted a suspicious-looking cloud formation shaped like a Gyarados or Lapras drifting through the skies, sparking early theories about a potential new Legendary Pokémon.
While the franchise previously utilized a tropical setting in the Hawaii-inspired Pokémon Sun and Moon nearly a decade ago, the transition to full open-world design allows for a significantly different gameplay scale across these distinct island environments.

Release Window and Retro Alternatives
Mainline entries in the franchise historically launch in November. A 2027 release window puts the launch nearly two years out, extending the gap since 2022’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. However, given that Scarlet and Violet faced heavy criticism at launch for technical glitches and performance issues linked to a rushed schedule, the extended development cycle for Winds and Waves suggests a focus on quality polish.
To bridge the gap, Nintendo has released digital reissues of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on the Switch eShop for $20 each.
