Roblox Drops Open-Source ‘Cube’ AI to Generate 3D Assets

Roblox announced Monday that it has launched “Cube,” a new open-source 3D generative AI model presented at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to enable developers both on and off its platform to build complex 3D objects using simple text prompts.

Instant 3D Mesh Generation for Game Creators

Rolling out to creators later this week, Cube initially features a beta 3D mesh generation tool. This capability allows developers to generate “meshes”—the foundational 3D structures of digital objects—by entering a basic text prompt. For instance, typing “generate an orange racing car with black stripes” instantly outputs a functional 3D item that creators can refine directly within Roblox Studio.

By releasing Cube as an open-source model, Roblox is opening the underlying technology to external developers. Anyone outside the platform can customize the model, design proprietary plug-ins, or train Cube on specialized datasets to suit custom workflows.

Expanding AI Capabilities: Text, Speech, and Voice Control

In addition to 3D object creation, Roblox unveiled three upcoming generative AI features scheduled to roll out in the coming months:

  • Text Generation: Enables developers to integrate dynamic text-based AI features, allowing players to engage in real-time, open-ended conversations with interactive non-player characters (NPCs).
  • Text-to-Speech: Powers automated game narration, grants NPCs spoken voices, and generates live verbal captions.
  • Speech-to-Text: Introduces direct voice command mechanics, letting players verbally direct character actions, such as telling an avatar to move forward.

The Blueprint for ‘4D Creation’ and Dynamic Environments

Roblox plans to expand Cube’s capabilities beyond individual objects to encompass complete scene generation and multi-object interactions. Future updates will allow creators to generate entire environments from prompts—such as instantiating a dense forest and commanding the AI to shift the green foliage to autumn hues to reflect changing seasons.

This initiative aligns with the company’s long-term vision of “4D creation,” a term Roblox uses to describe fully interactive environments. “Where the fourth dimension is interaction between objects, environments, and people,” explained Nick Tornow, Vice President of Engineering at Roblox.

Industry Context and Rising AI Concerns in Gaming

Cube joins Roblox’s existing roster of generative AI utilities, which already include automated texture generation and avatar creation tools aimed at accelerating development pipelines for independent studios. The release comes amid intense competition in the space; Tencent recently released its own open-source 3D generation model, designed to construct 3D models from text prompts or 2D image inputs.

Despite these technical advancements, generative AI adoption continues to generate friction across the games industry. A recent GDC State of the Industry report revealed that 30% of game developers believe generative AI negatively impacts the sector. Furthermore, a CVL Economics study projects that 13.4% of gaming industry jobs could be altered or replaced by AI automation by 2026.
