Roblox is launching mandatory facial age verification for all global users seeking to access communication features starting in January, responding directly to a barrage of child safety lawsuits and investigations over illicit content on its platform. The gaming giant is simultaneously rolling out age-restricted chat filters to ensure players only interact with users in similar age demographics.
Rollout Timeline for Mandatory Verification
The platform’s new age-check infrastructure begins with immediate voluntary verification. In the first week of December, Roblox will enforce mandatory age checks across initial test markets, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. By January, mandatory verification will extend to all users globally who wish to retain access to text and voice chat.
Mounting Legal Pressure over Child Safety Risks
The strict verification measures follow severe legal pushback against Roblox, including lawsuits filed by state attorneys general in Texas and Louisiana. These legal actions gained momentum following extensive investigative reports indicating that Roblox was exposing young users to severe hazards, including child grooming, extortion, and explicit adult content.
How Facial Verification and Data Privacy Work
To complete the verification process, users must open the Roblox application, grant camera access, and follow automated on-screen facial scanning prompts. Biometric processing is handled by third-party identity vendor Persona. Roblox confirmed that both Persona and Roblox will immediately delete all submitted photos and videos once age estimation is complete.

Age-Group Segmentation and Chat Restrictions
Following successful facial scans, accounts are categorized into six distinct age tiers: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 and older. Communication features will be strictly isolated based on these tiers to prevent unauthorized adult-minor interactions.
Under the new system, a 12-year-old assigned to the 9 to 12 tier can communicate only with users aged 15 or younger. All players aged 16 and older will be automatically blocked from communicating with that user.
“We see these changes as a way to help ensure users are able to socialize with others in age groups that are appropriate, but also help limit contact between minors and adults that they do not know,” stated Raj Bhatia, Roblox’s Vice President and Head of User and Discovery Product.
Industry Firsts and Parental Controls
Roblox management considers biometric estimation essential, highlighting that simple self-reported birth dates during sign-up fail to prevent age falsification.
“We believe that this is something that is first for a company like Roblox in the gaming space and social media and messaging to require explicit age estimation before anybody has access to communication,” emphasized Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox.
In tandem with mandatory scans, the company is deploying an updated Safety Center featuring tools and guidelines for parents and caregivers to customize parental control settings.
