Following mounting lawsuits and regulatory investigations over child safety, online gaming platform Roblox is officially requiring all global users to complete mandatory facial age verification to access chat features. The platform-wide requirement, rolling out worldwide after initial regional testing, replaces easily bypassed birth-date prompts with strict biometric verification.
How the Facial Scanning Verification Process Works
To complete the mandatory check, users must open the Roblox app, grant camera access, and follow step-by-step video instructions to verify their facial features. Third-party identity vendor Persona handles the age estimation processing. Both Roblox and Persona confirm that all captured images and video files are permanently deleted immediately after the verification is processed.
Alternative Verification Methods and Behavioral Auditing
While playing Roblox remains possible without age checks, communication features stay strictly locked behind verification. Users aged 13 and older can opt to upload government-issued ID documentation instead of undergoing facial scans. If the automated system incorrectly estimates an age, users can file an appeal using official ID or rely on parental control settings to manually update account details.
“Leveraging multiple signals, Roblox is constantly evaluating user behavior to determine if someone is significantly older or younger than expected,” the company stated in a blog post. “In these situations, Roblox will soon ask users to repeat the age-check process.”
Age-Bracket Restrictions and Parental Controls
Once verified, players unlock age-tiered messaging designed to restrict communication to safe peer groups. Roblox segments users into six distinct age brackets: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 plus. Users can only chat with players within their own bracket or adjacent age tiers. For instance, players aged 9 to 12 can converse with other 9–12 users, children under 9, and teenagers in the 13–15 group.
For children under 9, chat functions remain completely disabled by default. Parents must explicitly provide verified consent to unlock text capabilities for accounts in this tier.
Lawsuits and Child Safety Pressures
The policy overhaul follows legal actions brought by state attorneys general in Texas and Louisiana over minor safety failures on the platform. These legal challenges emerged following reports showing how Roblox was exposing young users to severe threats, including online grooming and sexually explicit material.
Roblox asserts that mandatory biometric checks offer a far more dependable safeguard than simple self-reported birth years, significantly hardening platform defenses against bad actors.
