MoviePass officially launched its Hollywood fantasy platform, Mogul, into public beta on Wednesday, allowing over 400,000 waitlisted movie fans worldwide to build and manage their own virtual film studios. Inspired by daily fantasy sports leagues, the web-based game enables players to step into the shoes of studio executives, drafting real-life actors, directors, and upcoming theatrical releases to score points based on real-world box office performance.
Prior to this wider public rollout, approximately 5,000 beta testers evaluated Mogul during its pre-season phase. Despite lacking an active leaderboard or live gameplay during early testing, the core mechanics proved straightforward and accessible, even for users without prior experience in fantasy sports.
Drafting Your Fantasy Studio Roster
Upon creating a custom studio name, each participant receives an initial virtual budget of 1 million “Mogul Coin” to assemble their opening lineup. Because players do not compete with real currency at launch, this budget serves as the primary mechanic for balancing roster value.
Understanding Talent Pricing and Budget Management
Drafting options vary in price based on commercial expectations. For example, adding the upcoming musical sequel Wicked: For Good costs $100,000 in virtual capital. Securing lead actresses Cynthia Erivo (playing Elphaba) or Ariana Grande (playing Glinda) costs $25,000 each, while securing director Jon M. Chu requires an additional $25,000 allocation.
Players have one week to finalize their initial roster and are granted two free swaps each week to adjust their studio lineup as release dates approach.

Strategic Execution: Profitability, Timing, and Risk
MoviePass founder Stacy Spikes explained that the platform was crafted to simulate genuine movie studio operations, requiring strategic thinking under volatile conditions. Studio heads must monitor industry news and real-world factors that directly influence a film’s commercial trajectory.
For instance, off-screen controversies, such as sexual misconduct allegations facing Tron: Ares star Jared Leto, can alter box office performance, prompting strategic player trades.
Spikes also highlighted several tactical approaches for players looking to maximize points:
- Spot Breakout Stars: Identifying up-and-coming talent early can yield huge returns before their draft costs increase.
- Explore Global Cinema: Looking beyond major Hollywood franchises to markets like Bollywood can offer undervalued talent and strong box office returns.
- Leverage Indie Films: Independent movies often carry low acquisition costs while offering high upside potential relative to investment.
Crucially, scoring on Mogul relies on net profitability rather than raw gross box office totals. Timing is equally vital: drafting a movie well ahead of its theatrical premiere costs significantly less than picking it up right before launch.

Blockchain Infrastructure, Prizes, and Future Roadmap
Under the hood, Mogul operates on Sui, a Layer 1 blockchain infrastructure that records all roster drafts and strategic trades. As players rise on the global leaderboard, they become eligible for digital collectibles, including signed film posters and official memorabilia.
All players currently participate in a single global league. The inaugural fall season runs for 12 weeks across October, November, and December, coinciding directly with Hollywood’s awards season. To drive initial engagement, MoviePass established a prize pool worth up to $100,000 in tokens for top performers during this first season.
Additionally, users who activate their accounts before 11:59 p.m. ET on October 31 will automatically receive Founding Member status alongside exclusive in-app badges.
Future development plans include native mobile applications for iOS and Android, alongside private leagues for friends. According to Spikes, licensing deals planned for next year could eventually allow users to compete for cash prizes.
