Russian communications regulators officially banned the online gaming platform Roblox nationwide due to the presence of LGBTQ+ content that violates state laws, according to reports from Russian state media.
State Media Cites Anti-LGBTQ Laws for Platform Ban
Roblox functions as a massive user-generated gaming ecosystem where millions build and share custom experiences, similar to Minecraft. The platform plays host to a vast array of interest-based communities, spanning from military roleplaying groups to LGBTQ+ solidarity spaces. However, Russia enforces strict legislation labeling public LGBTQ+ advocacy as “extremist activity.”
According to reports translated from state-owned Russian news agency TASS, the federal communications watchdog specifically cited the platform’s hosting of LGBTQ+ material as a primary justification for enforcing the ban. Roblox did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the restriction.
Mounting Global Safety Controversies and Regulatory Pressure
The Russian ban arrives while Roblox grapples with intense international scrutiny over child safety and moderation oversight. Investigations and reports recently exposed severe vulnerabilities where underage players were exposed to child predators. In the United States, state attorneys general in both Texas and Louisiana opened legal probes into the company’s protection practices.
In response to growing pressure, Roblox rolled out stricter age verification steps and expanded moderation tools. The company announced plans to mandate facial recognition checks starting in January to grant access to communication features—a policy shift that has sparked separate security and privacy concerns regarding biometric data storage.
Controversial Content Policies Spark Industry Backlash
Beyond child safety measures, Roblox recently instructed developers to explicitly label any games or experiences centered around sensitive social, political, or religious topics. This measure allows parents to block children under 13 from accessing designated content.
The policy drew swift backlash from prominent industry organizations, including Out Making Games, Women in Games, and BAME in Games. In an open letter, the advocacy groups criticized the guidelines, highlighting that fundamental topics such as “pay equity in sports” were categorized as sensitive political issues.
“While parental controls serve an important purpose, they shouldn’t come at the expense of fundamental human dignity,” the joint statement emphasized. “We are calling on Roblox to reconsider these guidelines and find ways to protect young users without legitimizing discrimination or silencing important voices.”

Massive Russian Player Base Affected
The loss of the Russian market cuts off a substantial user segment for the gaming platform. App intelligence provider Appfigures estimates that Roblox accumulated approximately 70 million mobile downloads across Russia historically, with roughly 8 million of those installations occurring during this year alone.
