Sony will officially raise the price of PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States starting Thursday, August 21, directly responding to new federal import tariffs taking effect.
Trump Administration Tariffs Drive $50 Price Increase
Citing a “challenging economic environment”—an explicit reference to President Trump’s recent tariffs on imported goods—Sony is increasing console prices by approximately $50 across the board in the American market.
Under the revised pricing structure, the flagship PlayStation 5 will rise to $549.99, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will cost $499.99, and the premium PlayStation 5 Pro will jump to $749.99. The adjustments follow an action by the White House on July 31, which announced a 15% tariff on products imported from Japan.
Global Impact and History of PS5 Price Changes
Sony confirmed that it has no immediate plans to increase console prices in other international markets, nor is it adjusting the cost of PlayStation accessories at this time. However, this isn’t the first time external economic factors have influenced hardware pricing. In April, Sony raised PlayStation console prices across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand citing similar macroeconomic pressures.
Furthermore, Sony previously instituted regional console price increases back in 2022 to offset soaring global inflation, though the United States market was notably spared from those adjustments at the time.
How Microsoft and Nintendo Are Handling Trade Pressures
Sony is not the only gaming giant shifting financial burdens onto consumers amid incoming tariffs. Competitors across the industry have proactively updated their pricing strategies over recent months.
Microsoft signaled major shifts back in May, stating it would increase Xbox console prices by $80 to $100 while simultaneously marking up select games, controllers, and peripherals. Meanwhile, Nintendo took a more targeted approach by increasing prices solely on select accessories for the new Nintendo Switch 2, choosing to keep the retail price of the core console unchanged.
