Sony Unveils ‘PlayStation Family’ Parental Control App

On Wednesday, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the launch of “PlayStation Family,” a dedicated iOS and Android application engineered to give parents centralized, real-time control over their children’s console activity, screen time, and digital spending.

Real-Time Screen Management and Activity Tracking

While Sony has offered built-in parental safety settings on its consoles for years, the standalone mobile app consolidates these utilities into a single hub while introducing several new monitoring capabilities. Through the app, guardians receive instant notifications showing which game a child is playing in real time. The software also allows parents to approve or decline requests for extra playtime or access to age-restricted games on the fly, alongside setting customized daily screen-time limits.

Detailed daily and weekly activity summaries break down exactly how many hours kids spend on the console, explicitly highlighting their most played titles.

Custom Content Filters and Financial Oversight

Beyond tracking playtime, PlayStation Family includes robust content filters aimed at enforcing age-appropriate gaming. Preset configurations automatically apply recommended restrictions based on specific age tiers, though parents retain the ability to fine-tune settings for each individual child profile.

The app also provides controls for privacy and social interactions, allowing parents to restrict online features. Financial controls are fully integrated as well, enabling users to add store funds, view account balances, and set monthly spending caps to regulate digital purchases.

Industry Pressure Mounts Over Youth Online Safety

Sony’s dedicated software rollout arrives amid heightened global scrutiny regarding child safety within online gaming ecosystems.

The gaming industry has faced growing pressure to safeguard young users, most notably seen in recent backlash against Roblox—a platform where children aged 12 and under make up 40% of the active base. Following criticism over its safety protocols, Roblox recently expanded its age-estimation tech across all user accounts and partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to establish clearer age ratings and content descriptions across its platform.
